Make every Monday a little more mindful

Mondays may look a little different these days. Post covid-19’s  lockdown restrictions, many long-standings habits have changed potentially forever. Monday mornings may start with a coffee in your new at home office, or a traffic jam on-route to work. Whatever the setup, we have some top tips to help Monday feel a little more mindful.

A positive start

If you are a glass-half-full sort of human, it is time to turn those habits on their head with some positive affirmations. It may sound a little cheesy, but some confident conversations with yourself for a few minutes before starting your day can be a mood elevator. Pick affirmations that suit the week you have ahead and repeat them every day. Those that resonate with you the most will have the biggest effect.

Eat well

We all have different eating habits, so a diet that supports you every day can keep that metabolism in check. Our Brand Manager Claire starts with a strong breakfast, ‘It is the only way to start my day. As soon as I arrive at the office a large bowl of strawberry granola, or porridge in the winter, is first on the agenda. Top with any fruit that is in season, I get creative with what I eat so it never gets tired.’

Take time out

Working 8-10 hours every day can mean stress levels on the first working day of the week can skyrocket. As we move to a flexible, work from home approach, our Senior Social Media Executive Chloe, found working behind a screen in a confined area damaging to her mental health. Taking time out was her way of keeping her stress levels under control, ‘Going outside was and is my medicine, it helps me to separate my headspace and relax away from ‘normality’.

Breathing techniques

Take a moment, take a breath; sometimes the simplest of techniques can take away times of anxiety and stress. Monday can involve anything that ups your blood pressure from last-minute deadlines to getting stuck in a traffic jam. If our day isn’t going our way, tuck yourself into a small private corner and follow these steps:
  1. Sitting in a chair position your hip shoulder-width apart with hands by side.
  2. Let your breath flow as deep down into your belly as is comfortable, without forcing it.
  3. Try breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  4. Breathe in gently and regularly. Some people find it helpful to count steadily from 1 to 5. You may not be able to reach 5 at first.
  5. Then, without pausing or holding your breath, let it flow out gently, counting from 1 to 5 again.
  6. Keep doing this for 3 to 5 minutes.
